$49 Million Funding Initiative Announced to Support Medicare Rebate for Endometriosis consultations
Adelaide, 10 May 2024
Minister Ged Kearney, Assistant Minister for Health and Aged Care, has announced a significant $49 million funding initiative aimed at bolstering Medicare rebates for endometriosis pain consultations.
Australia’s peak body for endometriosis and pelvic pain, ACE, welcomed the introduction of these new Medicare rebates. Dr Susan Evans joined Minister Kearney at the announcement in Adelaide.
"For too long, the care of people suffering from endometriosis and pain has been undervalued. Medical rebates were the lowest of any area of specialist medicine.
These changes are A wonderful first step to financially supporting gynaecologists who take time to listen, explain, and upskill in the management of endometriosis and pelvic pain” Dr Susan Evans, Director Australian Coalition for Endometriosis and pelvic pain.
This substantial financial support marks an essential first step in providing backing for gynaecologists who dedicate time to empathetically listen, educate, and enhance their skills in managing endometriosis and pelvic pain.
Jess Taylor, Chair of the Australian Coalition for Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain commented, "This is a positive step in the right direction. We call on further investment from the government to ensure accessible services for people living with endometriosis and pelvic pain, and the workforce to deliver services”.
